Proactive vs. Reactive

College football is coming soon! Woo hoo! As an avid fan, especially of my Florida Gators this week’s blog shares some tips on getting ready to be part of the advocacy game. Follow this advice and you can be on the winning team!

Think proactively…Sometimes advocating on measures designed to improve your community, or asking your legislator to sponsor a bill that will have a positive impact, may have a greater likelihood of success during the legislative session. And it sends a strong message to your legislator(s) that you’re not always just reacting, but thinking creatively to solve a problem or improve the quality of life in your community.

Pick your battles carefully and prioritize what’s most important. If your city or organization really needs state assistance to fund a project, making legislators your enemy on a minor issue will mean you may lose their support on what really matters.

Focusing your advocacy efforts on issues that will have the greatest impact demonstrates to lawmakers that these issues are of great importance within their districts; and they will listen when you speak about them!

And the end result? VICTORY for your city or organization!
